Internet Safety

Cyberbullying is defined as bullying or harassment that takes place online; includes posting embarrassing pictures or unkind comments on a person's profile or sending them via instant message or email.  This hurtful activity can lead to anxiety and depression of the victim.  Please take the time to sign up for a Facebook and/or MySpace account and see what your child is saying and doing online.

Computing Tips

Every computer that connects to the Internet should have three things: a firewall, anti-malware software, and anti-virus software.  Without these three things you are leaving yourself open to attack.  A firewall can either be a piece of hardware you buy and hookup to your computer/network, or it can be software.  If you have a network (or wireless) router, you may want to find out if it has firewall capabilities built-in to it.  Some purchased anti-virus programs come with firewall software bundled with it.  Make sure you turn off the firewall that comes with Windows (limited capabilities) if you use another firewall.  It's not wise to have 2 firewalls running on the same computer.

A good source for firewall information is Firewallguide.com

Anti-malware software cleans unwanted trojan horse virii and other unseen programs that "automatically" get in your computer while visiting some websites.  This should be run every week!  A good example of anti-malware software is Malwarebytes.  This free program can be downloaded from Malwarebytes.org  If your computer is running slower and slower, this may be the problem.  At least it would be a good first step in solving the problem.

Anti-virus software is necessary to keep virii off your computer, or at least alert you to the fact you have a virus on your machine.  Some anti-virus programs are free such as AVG free.  Here are links to other good anti-virus software sites:

Not having all three of these utilites on your computer is like driving your car without ever checking the oil.  Yes, it will run for a while, but then......

Podcasts

Podcasts are video and/or audio clips that can be downloaded for free using Apple itunes.  There are thousands of extremely helpful, educational video clips.  iTunes is free to download for Macs or PCs from this website: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

If you choose to leave the two boxes checked, you will need to input an email address.  Then click "Download Now".  The software will probably be saved to your "downloads" folder if you are on a Windows computer.  That folder is inside your "My Documents" folder.

  1. 1.  Double-click on itunes setup.
  2. 2.  Install the software ( it may require you to restart your computer).
  3. 3.  Open itunes and double-click on the "itunes U" link in the black bar across the top of the window.
  4. 4.  Click on K-12.
  5. 5.  Pick an institution on the left, like "Michigan's MI Learning".
  6. 6.  You can use the categories on the right to sort through podcasts or search through any content in the center of the page.
  7. 7.  Podcasts are recurring events and you "Subscribe" to them in order to keep up with the latest content.  After you click subscribe, the podcast is downloaded into your itunes U folder.
  8. 8.  Just click on the itunes U folder and double-click on the podcast to hear or see it.
  9. 9.  If you want to limit access to the itunes store, just click on Edit - Preferences.  There is a Parental Controls tab that allows you to turn off the itunes store, but allow access to itunes U.

Podcasts can be a great way to engage students who may be struggling with a particular skill or topic.

Another way to locate podcasts is to use the Search window in itunes.  After the results show, click on Podcasts, or itunes U to narrow the results to podcasts.  Keep in mind you will be viewing mixed content if you use this method.
